The frescoes

Splendid and bright colors, hidden or faded by time, the frescos are present in all three cave churches and are among the best and most studied examples of medieval rock painting. Strict images of saints, alongside depictions of the enthroned Christ, stand out on the bare rock walls, scrutinizing the visitor and almost arousing awe at sacred images, preserved for almost 800 years, a rare testimony of popular devotion in the Middle Ages .
